I’ve been leery as of late posting photos of my kids up on the interwebs, except for FB where I know everything *should* be locked except to friends… but I had to show this off.

Olivia was never much of a “doll” type of kid, where she HAD to carry around her favorite doll or blankie or whatever. (Not really “girly” either, she wanted to be a trash-can last year and was Mario this year, she complains when her outfits look “too pretty” or “flowery”… much like I was as a child.) Chloe here is SUCH a different child. Her first favorite character is Minnie Mouse. Anytime she sees a Minnie Doll or a picture, her eyes get wide, points for retrieval, studies it, talks to her a bit then gives sweet kisses. If it were any other costume, she would have told us in 18 month old grumpy-bump fashion that she had no idea why she was being made to wear something so ridiculous.

My kids are super adorable.

More than 10 million people are desperately in need of food assistance in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, the World Food Program estimated this week.

The situation in Somalia in particular is the “worst humanitarian disaster in the world,” the U.N. refugee agency said on Sunday.

I mentioned once before that there are certain things you simply can not understand about parenting until you have a child. And by “certain things,” I mean “all of the things.” I’ve also said how being a parent made me more sensitive to images and stories like the one above.

I’ll be brutally honest, if I’d seen this image before I had my boys, I’d have thought, “Oh, that’s a real shame. Why must people suffer?” Then, I’d skip to the next blog or page or channel. Today, as my boys hurtle toward age 3, this image fucks me up.

That child is half a world away. If you’re not a parent, maybe that’s hard to connect with especially when we have our own problems in our own neighborhood. So, try looking at it this way: This photo was taken five days ago. Just last week. This little girl’s parents held her hand, tried to comfort her on Wednesday. We may not live on the same continent, but we all live in the same time, at the same time.
